Fun walk to remember Alexandra’s iconic Rev Buti

ALEXANDRA - The township will hold a fun walk to remember the iconic son of the township, the Rev Sam Buti.

Fun walkers will pound the streets of Alexandra in memory of one of the outstanding sons of the township, the late Rev Sam Buti on 9 September.

The walk is being organised by the Alexandra Sunday School Ministry of the Uniting Reformed Church in Southern Africa, in association with the Fat Cats Athletics Club in partnership with the Greater Alexandra Chamber of Commerce and Industry (Galxcoc).

The fundraising initiative looks set to become an annual event on the calendar of the township since it was initially launched last year with the blessings of the wife of the theologian, Mary. It will start at the iconic church on the corner of Rev Sam Buti Street and 5th Avenue, in which Rev Buti conducted his sermons.

From the church, walkers will move along the 7.5km route and end up at the newly-constructed Alex Mall in Tsutsumani Village. The purpose of the walk will be to honour the legacy of the giant of Alexandra while at the same time raising funds for the church’s renovation projects.

Rev Buti, among others, was a member of the Save Alexandra Campaign of the 1970s when the then-apartheid regime wanted to demolish the township and create hostels to accommodate migrant labourers from the then-homelands created for blacks.

The theologian, who died in 2010 and lies buried in the township, championed the cause of saving Alexandra, and his heroics paid off as the township is still intact today.
