Home of Champions retains Schools Winter Games championship

JOBURG – Team Gauteng won 28 medals including14 gold, 12 silver and two bronze.

 

Team Gauteng came out guns blazing and easily brushed aside the other eight provinces to retain the South African Schools Winter Games championship.

They did so in style and won by more than 30 points from their nearest rivals Western Cape at the four-day tournament from 10 to 13 July in Durban.

Team Gauteng won 28 medals including14 gold, 12 silver and two bronze. The team earned medals in seven of the nine sporting codes including gold in chess, football, jukskei, kho kho, netball, tennis and volleyball.

The kho kho boys, after coming short last year, turned the tables and outshined everyone this time around by winning all their eight games. The jukskei team performed well and took four gold medals and one silver.

Other standout achievements for Gauteng included teams with schoolchildren with special educational needs, ranging from wheelchair tennis, and netball, volleyball and football teams.The deaf netball and volleyball teams came back with seven golds and three silvers.

Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation Faith Mazibuko congratulated the winning team for their efforts in ensuring Gauteng remained the Home of Champions, the province’s slogan.

“Congratulations to team Gauteng on defending the title, we want to commend you not only for your excellence but in making sure that school sports lives.

“We are not only proud of their achievements as a team but for their contribution to sport and ensuring that the title remains within Gauteng – The Home of Champions,” she said.
