Varsity College makes fantastic debut at USSA soccer tournament

JOBURG – A good performance has guaranteed Varsity College's automatic entry into the USSA tournament in 2018.

Given the high level of competition in the B section, Varsity College men’s and women’s football teams had a fantastic debut in the University Sports South Africa (USSA) tournament held in Johannesburg.

The women’s team made it to the 3rd/4th place playoffs against Mangosuthu University of Technology but despite their efforts, lost that match to finish 4th overall.

Varsity College team captain Banyana Banyana player, Gabriella Salgado was awarded the Top Goal Scorer and Player of the Tournament in the B section.

“My USSA highlights are how far our team went and how we put everything we had on the field when we played,” she said. “We improved tremendously after our first game as we got used to competing on this level. Players improved individually as well. They took advice and interpreted it and performed better.”

The men’s team lost in their quarter-final match against Maties in a penalty shootout but came back fighting against Water Sisulu University winning that penalty shootout 4–2 to finish 7th overall.

The men’s team captain Ntila Mehlape said their preparations for the tournament, which included four friendlies against top teams, was very thorough.

“We are very excited about the fact that our performance this year resulted in our team automatically qualifying for USSA Football National Championships 2018,” he said.

Oratile Matlapeng, public relations and events coordinator at Varsity College Sandton won the Manager of the Tournament Award.
