Call for nominations for the Gauteng Sports Awards

JOBURG – Nominations open for the Gauteng Sports Awards and the Gauteng public is encouraged to nominate their sporting heroes.

 

Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Faith Mazibuko, launched the Gauteng Sports Awards with a passionate plea to grassroots sports federations and communities to nominate their favourite and outstanding sports personalities.

The Gauteng awards, which are a feeder to the National Sports Awards, will be held at the Silver Star Casino and Hotel on 1 October.

Speaking at the launch, Mazibuko said, “As our motto goes that Gauteng is the home of champions, we would like excellence being rewarded hence I am urging all sport federations in the province and communities to ensure they nominate the best out of their sportsmen and women so they can stand their own ground in the national awards.”

Nominations for the Gauteng awards opened on 14 July and will run until 8 August and the period to be considered for nominations is between 1 July 2016 to 30 June this year and nominees must be Gauteng residents, including members of the migrant communities who belong to Gauteng sporting bodies.

Nominations will only be accepted on the official nomination forms available from www.gautengsportawards. Forms can also be collected from any one of the sport federation offices and must be accompanied by supporting documentation, such as profiles, testimonials and photos of the nominees.

The overall winner of the Sports Personality of the Year will receive a whopping R45 000 while each nominee automatically qualifies for R5 000 and the category winner gets an extra R15 000. Some categories are voted for by members of the public and one voter will emerge as a winner of a motor vehicle as the prize for participating.
