Birds peck their way out of bad patch

ALEXANDRA - Bluebirds are on winning ways after bad patch.

The bad run of Alexandra’s sole representative in the women’s top flight football league is over as the Bluebirds Ladies are back to winning ways.

The Alex outfit, which plies its trade in the Sasol Women’s League, bounced back to winning ways after beating Croesus Ladies 2–0 at home on 25 June. They were back to old habits on 1 July when they lost 4–0 away to Banyana Banyana skipper, Janine van Wyk’s girls, the talented JVW Ladies.

On the weekend of 8 July, Banyana baMalvin (Malvin’s Girls) as the Birds are popularly known in Alex, bounced back with a win at home against Zebra Forces Ladies, squeaking home 2–1. An own-goal and one from captain fantastic Nyatama Mnguni secured the three points for the Beautiful Birds.

They are currently in 8th position on the Sasol League log with 22 points from 15 games, three points ahead of Highlands North-based Croesus Ladies.

The next game for Banyana baMalvin will be home against Servol Ladies from Deep South on the evening of 19 July at the Alexandra Stadium, with kick off set for 6pm.

Birds coach Malvin Khumalo said his team played with nine players against Zebra Forces due to injuries and the unavailability of others. “I am happy that against all odds we showed the stern stuff that we’re made of and our fighting spirit enabled us to win the game.”

Khumalo said the team was slowly but surely coming together and beginning to gel. “This was evident in our victory against Zebra Forces despite being two players down.”
