Former Witsie returns as doctor

JOHANNESBURG – Wits rugby team welcomes former star player Charles Baggot as team doctor.

As the annual Varsity Shield competition nears, Wits University has a past rugby player serving as the team doctor for the upcoming season.

Having already etched his name in the annals of the Varsity Cup, Charles Baggot is no stranger to the exhilaration that comes with running out to represent a proud Wits side.

Senior manager of Wits Sports, Michael Dick said, “Baggot played for Wits in the 2011 and 2012 Varsity Shield competitions and followed that up by donning the captain’s Armband when Wits contested the 2013 Varsity Cup tournament. And although the university endured a dismal campaign, Charles led the team with both unrelenting grit and determination.

“He now makes a timely return to the set-up as Wits once again prepares to do battle – although this time, in the all-important role of team doctor.”

Baggot said, “It’s very surreal to [once again] be part of the team, but it’s something I’ve always wanted to do once my playing days were over. I’m passionate about the club and it seemed like the obvious choice to get back into the club scene once I finished my community service year.”

According to Baggot, Wits will be the ‘dark horses’ of the competition with the team having previously struggled in the way of being the new team on the block. The team now has experienced players along with passionate coaches to bolster the team’s cause.

He also believes that his new role in the set-up will be of even greater importance going forward. “Apart from doing the medical stuff, I think I can contribute in other ways as well. I have six years of experience playing rugby for Wits, so this will be handy when pressure is high on the field. I understand the game and will be of assistance to the coaches [in that] I would have immediate access to the field.”

Playing in the Varsity Cup has been a definite highlight in Baggot’s career. “I have always felt lucky enough to have had the opportunity. I have great memories of the tournament that I will remember forever.”

Providing advice to the current Varsity Cup team, Baggot said, “Enjoy it, savour every moment, both good and bad. Don’t put too much pressure on yourselves, just do it for the love of rugby. It is a privilege to be part of something this big, and when it’s done, you can be proud and hold your head up high.”
