‘Big Brother’ teams club together to fix stadium

ALEXANDRA – The township now has three clubs campaigning in the ABC Motsepe League.

Alexandra’s three ‘Big Brother’ clubs in the ABC Motsepe League have clubbed together to raise the R160 000 needed to lay turf at the dilapidated Alexandra Stadium.

Alexandra United, Alex Black Aces and Baberwa FC have all put some money into the hat for the playing surface at their home venue.

The secretary general of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association, Mafika Morajane, said he was hoping the stadium would be ready in a week or two as it had been closed now for close to a month. “The teams wanted to level the surface and then plant new grass for the entire pitch to cover some the patched areas of the field,” Morajane said.

He added that new Alexandra teams, Aces and Baberwa, had boosted the township’s football profile, making Alex the only township in the country to have three teams in the same league.

Alex United has been a perennial campaigner in the ABC Motsepe League since the days when it was known as the Vodacom League. Hope City Giants, as Alex United is known to its faithful fans in Alexandra, has been campaigning in this league close to 15 years.

Aces came into the spotlight when they sold their Absa Premiership status to Cape Town City at the beginning of the Premier Soccer League season and then relocated to Alex as Alex Black Aces.

Baberwa bought the status of Soweto Panthers from Albert Mokoena, a former CEO of the Premier Soccer League.
