Familiarise yourself with Cycle Challenge road closures

RIVERSANDS – Read about the upcoming Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge road closures.

With only a few more days to go until the Telkom 947 Cycle Challenge, the organising committee has urged all road users and community members to familiarise themselves with road closures on 20 November.

The event is in its 20th year and is set to attract more than 30 000 cyclists to the streets of Joburg.

The race starts and ends at Century Property’s Riversands Commercial Park.

As a necessary precaution to keep all the cyclists safe, certain roads will be closed on the day by Metro police, Johannesburg Roads Agency (JRA) and the City of Joburg.

These will be closed for as short a time as possible to ensure the safety of the cyclists and then will be reopened, but motorists are urged to use alternate routes during affected times.

The route, which is set to start and end at Riversands Commercial Park, meanders through the streets of Johannesburg from Summit Road around the city on the M1, Jan Smuts Avenue and Witkoppen Road, bringing cyclists back via Cedar Road, through Steyn City Boulevard and back up to the finish line along Riversands Boulevard.

There will be a number of dedicated supporter zones, including Telkom spectator zones along Jan Smuts Avenue and Witkoppen Road and a 947 and Telkom powerzone in Dunkeld. Joburgers are encouraged to come out and support the cyclists and soak up the atmosphere of this world-class event.

Free parking will be made available on-site at Riversands Commercial Park and GPS coordinates can be found on the 947 mobile app. Traffic officials and marshals will also be on hand to help traffic move in a swift manner.

“We are always acutely aware of the impact that the race has on our residents and strive to do everything possible to minimise the impact on those who need to move around on Cycle Challenge Sunday,” Ravi Naidoo, 947 station manager said.

The Cycle Challenge encourages cyclists to Ride for a Purpose, which gives everyone the opportunity to support a cause or charity that may be meaningful to them. Many cyclists have been inspired to find their purpose and to make a significant difference in the lives of others.

To date, through the Ride for a Purpose initiative, the Cycle Challenge has managed to help raise R50 million in just five years. There are already more than 120 registered charities entered into the race.

Residents are advised to visit www.cyclechallenge.co.za for details on all road closures, as well as a detailed, interactive route to help motorists find alternative routes.
