New king of Alex schools football to be crowned

ALEXANDRA – There will be a new king of the boys' division of the Discovery Alex Schools U12 League on 2 November.

A new king of the boys’ division of Alex Primary Schools football will be crowned on 2 November when new finalists, Skeen and Zenzeleni collide.

The two schools emerged as finalists of the Discovery Alex Schools U12 League in what is expected to be an exciting final at the Number 3 Square Grounds.

This follows the dumping of defending champions, MC Weiler 0–1 by a determined Zenzeleni side in the semi-finals of the tournament.

In the other semi-final, last year’s losing finalists Dr Knak were booted out 0–2 by who many feel are the champions-in-waiting, Skeen.

Skeen were the best performing school in the group stages, after amassing the highest number of points, 13 in total, as the only unbeaten team. They drew one game 2–2, incidentally the opener against the same final opponents, Zenzeleni.

Zenzeleni kicked out the defending champions via the boot of their hard working, Knowledge Masuluke, who found the back of the net in a goalmouth scramble.

What a tussle for the ball for the final berth in this encounter from two players of Skeen Primary School (black) and Dr Knak Primary School during the semis.

The defending champions never threatened Zenzeleni at all as the match was a one-sided affair, with Zenzeleni making all of the telling runs into the penalty box of MC Weiler.

MC Weiler coach Thabiso Vincent Maretele graciously accepted defeat and said he could not apportion any blame at all as he believed his boys did the best they could.

“We lost to a better organised side on the day,” he said. “It is anyway, a game of football. There is still next year to try our luck again, though I will only return with three boys from this crop of players.

“The team has been together for the last three seasons of the tournament but I am confident of making an impactful return with a new crop of players next year,” he added, as he consoled a tearful Samkelo Dlani, the MC Weiler goal minder.

In the Dr Knak–Skeen match, Skeen’s Tshepiso Mehlape, who plays for Howza De Laz in the local league and Odirile Malahlela scored in each half of the game respectively.

In the girls division, MC Weiler and Iphutheng will face off in the final after both disposed of Carter and Ekukhanyisweni 1–0 and 5–4 respectively.

This fixture will also produce a new champion, as defending champs Dr Knak were beaten in the group stages. Losing finalists last year, DH Carter were kicked out in the semis this time around.
