Favourites Iphutheng command high stakes

ALEXANDRA – The Discovery Alex Schools U12 League entered the third week with success for two-time champions, Iphutheng and defending champions, MC Weiler.

The Discovery Alex Schools U12 League entered its third week of the competition with yet another win by tournament favourites, Iphutheng Primary School’s boys’ team.

Iphutheng has won the tournament twice and is taking with them an unbeaten record into the fourth week of the group stage matches before the final which is scheduled for 26 October at the No 3 Square Grounds.

Iphutheng was granted a bye last week when Gordon Primary School arrived late for their tie and has so far amassed nine points from three games, putting them in pole position of Group One.

Defending champions of the tournament, MC Weiler got the better of Ithute with a 2–0 scoreline to maintain an unbeaten record, including a 2–2 draw in the second week against Ikage. MC Weiler is second on the log with seven points from three games.

Last year’s losing finalists, Dr Knak, who were beaten in the opening week of the games by the slick Iphutheng team, got an easy passage into the fourth week with a walkover. Dr Knak, who walloped Ithute 3–0 in the second week, was awarded a bye following registration issues with the Gordon players.

This is the second time that Gordon has been penalised. Last week, Gordon was penalised for failing to arrive on time for their match against Iphutheng, and their woes seem to be never ending.

This means that Gordon has not managed to collect even a single point from their three matches so far. In the opening match, they were taught a football lesson by MC Weiler who won 3–0.

In the Iphutheng-Ikage match, the two-time champions snatched a late winner through the boot of Matsobane Makhafola, a Super Stars player in the Alex football league. Hard working and talented, Pontsho Makhetha, a Happy Fighters FC player, missed two scoring opportunities that could have easily put the game beyond the reach of a determined Ikage team.

The Ikage players were reduced to tears when the referee blew the final whistle. Not even a word of consolation from their coach sufficed.

When interviewed by Alex News, Makhafola warned their next opponents, defending champions MC Weiler, to come prepared as he looks forward to banging in more goals. “I want to warn our next opponents that Iphutheng is on a roll and they should come prepared for a football jive on the pitch on 28 September,” Makhafola said.
