No room for slip ups now

ALEXANDRA – There is no room for mistakes as the Discovery Alex Schools U12 League enters the fourth of five weeks of play.

One slip-up now and the two-time champions of the Discovery Alex Schools U12 League, Iphutheng, will be dethroned from the top of the tournament table.

Having collected maximum points from an unbeaten record so far, only two points separate them from the defending champions of the tournament, MC Weiler. Both schools have played three games each, with Iphutheng topping the log with nine points after winning two of their games and annexing a bye for the other. The defending champions, on the other hand, MC Weiler, are trailing the top footballing primary school in Alex with seven points, after drawing one of their games.

If Iphutheng slips up now in the remaining two games, they could easily throw away their lead at the top of the table to the defending champions. Since the erection of a football facility at their school a couple of years back by Nedbank and the Sports Trust, MC Weiler has put it to good use and the school is now a football force to reckon with.

Last year, they won the tournament after a 100 per cent record in all the games they played. That record has been slightly dented this year with one draw against Ikage. But, notwithstanding that blemish, they are the team that has registered the biggest scoreline so far in the tournament, after drubbing Gordon 5–0 in their opening game.

One slip-up by Iphutheng could see MC Weiler spring up to the top of the table, while Dr Knak lies in wait as well hoping for slip-ups from the two.

Iphutheng and MC Weiler are grouped together in what is considered as the group of death, featuring the likes of Dr Knak and Ikage, which together form the top four football schools in the township. They also have Gordon and Ithute in the group.

At the end of the round-robin games on 12 October, two top schools from each of the two groups will qualify for the semifinals of the tournament on 19 October. The other schools will on that date begin playing positional games, which will go on until the final of the tournament scheduled for 26 October.
