Birds bolster squad with three gems

ALEXANDRA - New signings to bolster the squad of Bluebirds Ladies.

Bluebirds Ladies soccer team have signed three ‘masterpieces’ to bolster its squad for the remainder of the season.

Birds mentor Malvin Trynos Khumalo has been running the team for many years on a shoestring budget until the arrival of a financial partner, JM Busha Investment Group.

With more money, the Birds beat top spenders, Mamelodi Sundowns Ladies to secure the signature of highly talented and sought-after midfielder cum striker, Deveney Rhoda of Eldorado Ladies.

The Brazilian ladies had thrown their weight around in trying to secure the signature of this gem, even going as far as phoning the parents of the star player, urging them to convince her to join the Downs outfit.

Sundowns apparently did not stop there in their quest for the signature of Rhoda. They allegedly went so far as to call the High Performance Centre in Pretoria, asking the centre not to hand over a copy of the player’s passport to the Birds for registration purposes.

Rhoda had told Sundowns in no uncertain terms that she wanted to join Alex Birds and they wondered why she was defying her parents. “Parents or no parents, I have made up my mind and I am joining Bluebirds Ladies, finish and klaar,” Rhoda was reported by Khumalo as having told the Downs scouts.

When Downs apparently called her mother again, Rhoda’s mother was said to have told them that if her daughter was happy to join Bluebirds, she stood by her daughter’s decision. This sealed the deal for Khumalo, and her passport was released by the centre in Pretoria.

The other two signings come from Sundowns, and Khumalo managed to secure the services of multi-talented defender Lerato Makhanya and ace goal poacher, Nonhlanhla ‘Gadafi’ Mthandi.

Besides the signings, Khumalo said he promoted two players from their junior ranks as part of an effort to bolster the squad, not just for the remainder of the season but as preparation for the coming one. “I want to turn Bluebirds into a force to be reckoned with in the coming years and I can only do this by venturing into the market as well to source some of those special players to bolster my squad,” he said.
