Alex News among finalists of Gauteng Sport Awards

ALEXANDRA – Alex News has been shortlisted for the awards under the Community Media of the Year category.

A leading Caxton publication that has, for many years, championed grassroots sport in Alexandra has been selected as one of the finalists of the Gauteng Sport Awards.

Alex News was shortlisted by an independent adjudication panel represented by individuals from the media, academic and sporting fraternity, following its nomination by the president of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association, Maisha Molepo.

Alex News and its senior sports journo, Sipho Siso, has been placed in pole position for the prestigious category of Community Media of the Year along with challengers for the throne, Soweto TV and TUT FM.

The winners will be announced at a glittering gala awards dinner at the Silverstar Casino in Mogale City on 2 October. The finalists were announced by Gauteng MEC for Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, Faith Mazibuko.

Speaking at the event at Emoyeni Estate, Mazibuko said this year saw a substantial increase in the nominations received which she said was confirmation the awards have over the years earned themselves the reputation of being one of the greatest sporting events in the province.

Among the other finalists are cricketing wonder boy, fast bowler Kagiso ‘KG’ Rabada. Alex News was among the first publications to feature the Fourways lad when he had just completed school in 2013 and was part of the South Africa U19 cricket team that participated in the World Cup in 2014.

Over the years, Alex News has featured and profiled young up and coming stars such as the youngest soccer club owner, Thembinkosi ‘Tiger’ Matholengwe of Alex Royal Tigers SC, whose profile also attracted interest from sister Caxton publication, BONA magazine. The paper has also profiled the youngest Alex referee, Lesego Nkosi, a 10-year-old Grade 6 pupil at Ekukhanyisweni Primary School.

This is just the tip of the iceberg in terms of the work done and stars profiled by this publication, including teams, coaches and various players and administrators.
