Decaying Altrek Sports Ground is upgraded

ALEXANDRA - Altrek Sports Ground in Eastbank, Alexandra, receives a much needed upgrade from petroleum giant, Engen.

Petroleum giant, Engen, has renovated the decaying Altrek Sports Ground in Eastbank, Alexandra, as part of its programme of Building Meaningful Bonds with various communities in the country.

The mammoth task was undertaken in partnership with SuperSport United, a premiership side that is sponsored by Engen.

As part of an inventive advertising deal, the company said a portion of its outdoor spend totalling R1.7-million would be used to upgrade soccer facilities in Johannesburg, Durban and Port Elizabeth.

Speaking at the launch of the programme at the Altrek Sports Ground, Engen’s general manager for corporate affairs, Tasneen Sulaiman-Bray said the company was committed to making a difference in communities.

“With that in mind, Engen is always looking at community-benefitting projects to support, and soccer has provided that platform for us to give back and assist in building happy and sustainable communities,” Sulaiman-Bray said.

The event was marked by a coaching clinic for local players conducted by SuperSport United at the Altrek Sports Ground, which was then handed over to the community for its use.

The other four community sports fields to receive upgrades included Dobsonville Sports Hub in Soweto, the Diepsloot Sports Hub, the Chatsworth Sports Hub in Durban, and the Walmer Sports Hub in Port Elizabeth.
