Runaway log leaders are humbled

ALEXANDRA - Defeat ends Young Stars' 14-match unbeaten streak in the Alex promotional league.

Runaway log leaders of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association Promotional League, Norwood Young Stars were humbled 2-0 by Seven Stars.

This ended Young Stars’ 14-match unbeaten streak in the Alex promotional league. If they win this league they will be promoted to the Safa Promotional League, which is two leagues below the National First Division.

Young Stars, or orange machine as the team has come to be known in Alexandra football circles in reference to their orange soccer jersey, has 43 points from 16 matches, 13 points ahead of their nearest rivals Black Poison which has 30 points from 15 games.

Young Stars have won 14 games, drawn one and lost one, banging in a total of 53 goals in the process compared to the 37 of Black Poison.

In the match against Seven Stars at the Altrek Stadium in Eastbank, the opposition opened the scoring in just two minutes of play through the boot of Silvester Tshisimba after he intercepted a bad pass from a Young Stars defender in front of the goals.

Thirteen minutes later, Search Twala of Seven Stars made it 2-0 as the teams went into halftime.

The second half saw no goals but Young Stars were unlucky not to score as they piled on the pressure on Seven Stars’ defence which stood resolutely.

Young Stars did get the ball into the opposition’s net but their lanky striker, Amos Layode, was adjudged to have used his hand to do so and was booked for his offence.

Meanwhile, in their game on 10 April at the Alexandra Stadium, Young Stars bounced back to winning ways after their shock defeat to Seven Stars. The orange machine hammered Chariot of Fire 4-0.
