One team must fall in Nedbank Cup

JOBURG - There will be no room for a draw when the big Soweto derby presents itself on 5 March at the FNB Stadium.

One of South Africa’s two biggest football clubs, Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates, will have to fall in the early stages of the lucrative Nedbank Cup when the two Soweto giants collide in the first round of 32 teams.

It has to be #OneTeamMustFall as there is no room for exhibition football – which the two giants are known for – and a draw is out of the question in this cup competition as there must be a winner to advance to the next round.

Amakhosi and the Buccaneers have come to be known as the ‘draw specialists’ in these Soweto derbies in which both teams have been tagged as boring and predictable.

Although fans continue to be duped by marketing trickery to get them to fill the stadium, everyone now knows that whenever there is a Soweto derby, the score line is easy to predict. If it’s not a 0-0 draw, then you can be rest assured that it will be 1-1.

But all that is out of the question in this match, and fans can brace themselves for a thriller as both teams will seek to win it inside the 90 as opposed to leaving it to the lottery of penalties.

Tickets for this game and other matches of the Nedbank Cup last 32, which will be played over six days, have gone on sale at Computicket, Shoprite and Checkers nationwide.

This was announced by the Premier Soccer League which said tickets for all matches, with the exception of the derby match, will be R40 for adults and R10 for children under 12 years old.

Tickets for the derby will sell for R100 for level 1 and 2, R80 for level 5 and R15 for children under 12 years old. The first matches of the cup will kick-off on 2 March and will be between Mthatha Bucks and Santos at the Athlone Stadium in Cape Town; and Maritzburg United against Black Leopards will be at the Harry Gwala Stadium in Pietermaritzburg, KwaZulu-Natal.
