SAB to fund tertiary studies of soccer players

JOBURG - Eligible Alex soccer players who ply their trade in the SAB League can now have their tertiary studies funded by the South African Breweries.

Alex soccer players who ply their trade in the SAB League can now have their tertiary studies funded by South African Breweries.

The company, in partnership with the South African Football Association (Safa), has announced the opening of the SAB League Study Assistance Programme, which will form part of its involvement in the country’s largest football development league that boasts more than 30 000 participants nationwide.

The company said it would fund the tertiary study-related fees of qualifying SAB League players.

“The study programme will present the players with a unique opportunity to work their way towards a professional football career with the advantage of a solid foundation of an academic qualification, which has become key in modern sports,” said Octavius Phukubye of the company.

“This is in line with SAB’s vision of offering a holistic approach to football development through the SAB League.”

Safa’s director of competitions, Balebetse Monnakgotla, said the introduction of the study programme was a step in the right direction for the overall development of football. “Our partnership with SAB continues to yield incredible results for Safa’s vision of football development. We have the opportunity to produce footballers who can be good role models in our communities while at the same time improving the standard of football in our country,” Monnakgotla said.

Application forms to participate in the Study Assistance Programme are available at Safa regional offices countrywide as of 8 February.
