Birds’ training off to a good start

ALEXANDRA - The Bluebirds Ladies Football Club's training session in anticipation of the commencement of the 2016 Sasol Women's League got off to a good start at the Altrek Sports Ground on 18 January.

The Bluebirds Ladies Football Club’s training session in anticipation of the commencement of the 2016 Sasol Women’s League got off to a good start at the Altrek Sports Ground.

This according to coach Malvin Khumalo, who said the club was overwhelmed by the response from new players who wanted to join. “We got more than 10 players, mostly from rural areas who had relocated to Alexandra in search of greener pastures,” he said.

“Some of them have been playing school football and want to try their luck in our various teams. You know the chaos you get when schools open at the beginning of the year with all the newbies in Grade 1– that was our experience on the first day of training.”

He said the new players would be assessed by the club and then channelled to the various divisions of the club. “Those who are senior team material will be sent to our reserve team to sharpen their skills further.”

Khumalo said he was delighted with the new players as this would boost their squads, especially the senior team which plays in one of the toughest leagues of women’s football.

The first week of training will be dedicated to physical training sessions. The senior team will only start with friendlies in the second week in preparation for the start of the Sasol League season, which was delayed due to the South African Football Association (Safa) 2015 Regional Promotion Playoffs and the 2015 National Championships, which have now both been done away with.

Khumalo said there was no news as yet from Safa concerning the start of the elite league, but “we don’t want to be caught by surprise and hence we’re ensuring our readiness with the start of training sessions to ensure the players are fit”.
