Birds to start prep for new Sasol League season

ALEXANDRA - Bluebirds Ladies Football Club coach Malvin Khumalo said his team will begin preparations for the coming season of the Sasol Women's League on 18 January.

Bluebirds Ladies Football Club coach Malvin Khumalo said his team would begin preparations for the coming season of the Sasol Women’s League on 18 January.

Although the South African Football Association (Safa) and sponsors, Sasol, have not announced a date for the start of the league, Khumalo said he was hopeful it would start soon, as early as February, maybe, especially with the Regional Promotion Playoffs and the Championships now done away with.

With the upcoming Rio 2106 Olympics in August, Khumalo said Safa could either push for the completion of the league before then or could opt for taking a break in August. A number of players of teams taking part in the Sasol League will have players travelling to Rio de Janeiro in Brazil on national duty.

“We’re waiting for Safa to call the club officials of the various teams to a meeting at which they will, among other things, announce the dates for the start and end of the Sasol League,” said Khumalo.

With this in mind, the Bluebirds mentor, whose team has survived two seasons in the tough league, wants all his players to assemble at the club’s premises on 18 January to start plotting their third successive year in the elite women’s football league. “We need to begin with our preparations in earnest so that by the time we’re given the dates for the league, the girls are ready to rock and roll,” he said.
