The gym focuses primarily on individuals interested in maintaining and improving fitness for a healthy lifestyle under the supervision of a Biokineticist and nursing sister.

Chairman of Super Hearts Ernie Saks said that they are calling on people who are interested in joining the gym. “Each member joining the gym has a medical assessment and a detailed programme of exercises prescribed according to the individuals level of fitness and specific needs,” he said.

Super Hearts committee member Wally Papendorf said that the gym moved to Wits facilities in 2003. “This non-profit organisation is a joint venture between Wits University, the city council, and its members (the Super Hearts),”

“We currently have over 200 members but many community members don’t know that we exist. We would love more people to take advantage of what we offer,” added Paperndorf.

The gym started in 1982 as the Joburg Cardiac Rehabilitation Centre at the Civic Centre before moving to Joburg Stadium. Maite Modibo who handles public relations for the gym said they provide gym classes under the supervision of a health care practitioner.

“All exercises performed are developed and modified, making each workout session both safe and challenging to the participants while emphasising quality over quantity,” said Modiba.
