2 primary schools dominate in soccer

ALEXANDRA - MC Weiler and Zenzeleni primary schools have dominated their respective groups following their emphatic wins in the final group stages of the Discovery Alex Schools League on 28 October.

MC Weiler and Zenzeleni primary schools have dominated their respective groups following their emphatic wins in the final group stages of the Discovery Alex Schools League.

MC Weiler beat a determined Ikage Primary School team 1-0 to top the table in its group with 11 points from five matches, sharing the top spot with one of the perennial powerhouses of Alex football, Dr Knak Primary School.

However, Dr Knak is effectively in second spot on goal difference, despite disposing of Bovet Primary School 3-1.

Zenzeleni amassed the highest number of points in the tournament with 14 points from five games after walloping Ithute Primary School 2-0. Zenzeleni’s goals were scored by Sibusiso Mgijima and Siphe Masangwana.

Their nearest rivals, two-time champions of the Discovery Alex Schools League, Iphutheng Primary School, only managed 11 points from five matches, though they cannot be written off in the semis on 4 November.

All the matches of the tournament are played every Wednesday at the No 3 Square Grounds in Alexandra. The final is scheduled for 11 November.

The solitary goal of the match between MC Weiler and Ikage came from the boot of Kabelo Seopa. The diminutive Simphiwe Mazibuko of Ikage missed an opportunity to level the score after his shot went wide of the posts, and teammate Matsobane Makhafola’s strike was parried over the crossbar by the MC Weiler goalie.

“I was unlucky in that instance,” said Makhafola.
