New powerhouses of Alex schools football emerge

ALEXANDRA - The establishment of a football sporting facility at MC Weiler in 2012 and Zenzeleni’s spotlight on soccer are beginning to bear fruit as the two primary schools could soon emerge as the new powerhouses of Alex schools football.

The establishment of a football sporting facility at MC Weiler Primary School in 2012, and Zenzeleni Primary School’s determination to improve its soccer are beginning to bear fruit as the two schools could soon emerge as the new powerhouses of Alex schools football.

MC Weiler was able to build a state-of-the-art football pitch through donations by the Nedbank Cup’s Goals4Goals campaign, which is a charity drive in partnership with the Sports Trust.

Zenzeleni, on the other hand, sought to rid itself of the underdog tag on the local schools soccer scene, which they have carried around for years. Sports teacher at the school, Makhasandile Msindo, said they implemented various actions to improve their soccer, combined with vigorous training sessions for their teams.

Both schools are set to emerge as the winners of the group stages of the Alexandra Discovery Schools League, which is currently underway every Wednesday at the No 3 Square Grounds.

They lead the likes of Iphutheng, Dr Knak and Ithute, which are well-known as the powerhouses on Alex primary schools football scene.

Iphutheng are the two-time champions of the Discovery schools league and they currently lie second with eight points from three games; with Zenzeleni leading with 11 points from the same number of games.

MC Weiler and Dr Knak have eight points apiece from four games and the final round this week will be crucial as it will determine the top school in the group.

The competition will culminate in a final of the tournament on 11 November at the No 3 Square Grounds.
