JOBURG - The stage is set for the five regional champions of the Engen Knockout Challenge who will lock horns at Lucas Moripe Stadium for the second edition of the Engen Champ of Champs.

The stage is set for the five regional champions of the Engen Knockout Challenge who will lock horns at Lucas Moripe Stadium for the second edition of the Engen Champ of Champs U17 tournament.

This year’s event features Amazulu, Chippa United, Ajax Cape Town, Mamelodi Sundowns, Harmony Academy and hosts, SuperSport United.

The Gauteng leg of the Engen Knockout Challenge was won by Sundowns under the guidance of Godfrey Saphula, as they defeated a defiant Bidvest Wits side on penalties.

Engen group sponsorship manager, Brad Bergh, said from a brand point of view, they were delighted to see the tournament grow, and they were proud and privileged to see it becoming one of the best grassroots programmes.

“We are very proud that this knockout challenge is now celebrating its 12th year. When we entered football in the early 90s, we realised that we could not only support professional teams, because without supporting the youth, you are not going to produce quality players,” he said.

Last year’s winners, SuperSport United, will be the host of this year’s edition which kicks off on 9 October. SuperSport United’s CEO, Stanley Matthews, said they were happy as a club to be hosting the tournament and promised it would be a great spectacle.

“We are grateful to Engen, not just as a club but as football stakeholders,” he said.

“We hope to put on a great show and we are hoping the public can come out in their numbers to support the young stars.”
