Special sports for special children

ALEXANDRA - Mjikeni, an events company based in is once again hosting the Sports Spectacular for the 4th time and we will be hosting St Vincent school for the deaf for sporting activities and three other special schools.

Events company, Mjikeni, will host the Sports Spectacular for the fourth time in a row on 30 October at the Marlboro Sports Grounds.

The Sports Spectacular is a concept that came about in 2012 when Alex turned 100 years old. This event saw six Alex high schools and six companies sharing memories and joining hands in giving back to the township. At that event, 100 bursaries were offered to the Alex youth.

The spectacular aims to provide special sport for special children.

Companies willing to play soccer will also be hosted this year in the form of a knockout tournament featuring teams such as the South African Police Service, Emergency Medical Services and the City of Joburg, to name a few.

Games will include soccer, netball, bocce (an Italian sport similar to bowls), basketball, volleyball, junior boxing and tug of war. Special Olympics has confirmed that their organisation will bring about 50 participants and their coaches, as has Headway, a non-profit organisation for stroke survivors.

Kick-off for this year’s event is at 10am and a prize-giving ceremony will be held at 4pm. The St Vincent School for the Deaf and the Special Olympics team will also have an expo to showcase their handmade products to raise funds for their organisations.
