Cycling to help those in need

JOBURG - Sacred Heart College celebrated Heritage Day in style as they hosted the 2015 Hearts Into the Future Ride which encourages people of all ages to cycle.

According to teacher at the college, Peter Augustine, who helped organise the cycle ride with three pupils Cullen Hettema, Micheal Lazarus and Mujahid Moses, said the ride was aimed at connecting with the past and to give hope for the future, while raising awareness about xenophobia.

“This was an idea by three of our Grade 10 pupils who wanted to link cycling and Heritage Day,” said Augustine.

“We also wanted to raise funds for the Three2Six refugee project at our school and help raise awareness about anti-xenophobia and promote what Nelson Mandela and Mahatma Ghandi fought for.”

More than 200 cyclists took part in the ride dressed in their country’s colours to help combat the ever-growing racial divide.

The funds raised from the event will go to the Three2Six Project, an educational programme for refugee children managed by Sacred Heart College.
