ALEXANDRA - Over two hundred and forty parents and their young ones took to the street during the inaugural Karabo Learning Centre’s 5km Fun Walk to encourage a healthy lifestyle within the community.

More than 240 parents and their young ones took to the streets during the inaugural Karabo Learning Centre’s 5km Fun Walk to encourage a healthy lifestyle within the community.

The walk started in Richelieu Road in Lombardy West, where one of Karabo’s centre’s is situated, and went past their centre in Kew. The early learning centre has another branch in Alexandra.

According to Karabo Thange who runs the centre in Kew, the walk was in response to Joburg Mayor Park Tau’s State of the Province address on EcoMobility .

Sandton City will host the EcoMobility Festival in October where people will be encouraged to walk and cycle instead of using their own transport to enter the Sandton CBD.

Thange said they decided to take the initiative to encourage parents and their children to walk more, as it was good for their health.

“We have a school of more than 380 children, so we want to teach them at a young age that walking is healthy because we want to raise a healthy society.”

Metro police and emergency services vehicles escorted participants of the walk.

Thange was delighted with the turnout and hoped to make it even a bigger event next year. “I am very happy today, everything turned out well and we can only move forward from here.”
