Malandela Mighty Heroes dominated the Alexandra leg of the sixth edition of the Mandela Day Cup.

The club continued where they left off in the Maimane Alfred Phiri Games as both their teams in the U15 and U17 age division emerged victorious in the local leg of the tournament.

They will now represent Alexandra in the main provincial tournament to be held at the University of Johannesburg’s APB Sports Complex on 18 July.

Organised by the Inner City Ambassadors, the Mandela Day Cup tournament will gather teams of both boys and girls in the age categories of U15 and U17 from various regional local football associations from Alexandra, Johannesburg inner city, Soweto, Vosloorus and Cosmo City.

In the finals of the local leg of the tournament played at the No 3 Square Grounds, Mighty Heroes’ teams in both age divisions claimed victory and showed their dominance.

The first game of the day saw Mighty Heroes taking on Super Stars in the U15 division. Malandela started as the better of the two teams with the nimble-footed Tshepang Phala, affectionately known as ‘Messi’, hitting the crossbar after receiving a defence-splitting pass from midfield.

Coach Vincent Ramofi’s boys were the first to open the scoring when Tebatso Mokonyane tapped in from close range following a great set piece by Sithuli Zulu. Super Stars had no answers for Mighty Heroes and went into halftime trailing 2-0.

On resumption, Mighty Heroes continued where they left off with Zulu putting the game to bed when he scored the third goal to thrash Stars 3-0.

The second final was a tightly-contested one between Mighty Heroes and Rainbow Stars in the U17 division. Rainbow Stars controlled much of the game, but the mighty defence of the Mighty Heroes stood strong.

The game opened up in the second half with both teams looking to secure victory. The introduction of Thabang Mnguni changed the complexion of the game as Mighty Heroes showed more composure and control on the ball.

In the dying minutes of the game, Tshepang Machete tapped in from close range to score and Mighty Heroes held on to be crowned champions of the U17 local leg of the Mandela Day Cup.
