Alex football up for HPL

ALEXANDRA - The Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association (LFA) will host the Greater Mayfair Local Football Association in the High Performance Leagues (HPL) competition on 31 May.

Alex football secretary general Mafika Morajane said the Mayfair encounter would be their third game of the HPL, the first being against Jowest LFA, followed by Midrand LFA.

Morajane said the competition had proved to be a challenging and exciting league for Alex players as they had walloped the teams from the Midrand Local Football Association left, right and centre. The U13 team won 4-0, the U15s won 2-0 and the U17s won 2-0.

“This tells you how competitive Alex football is,” Morajane added.

On whether the HPL competition was meeting their expectations, Morajane said it was a case of “so far so good” as coaches and players had shown tremendous dedication in the games. Eight games will be played in total in the HPL, four home and another four away.

Morajane said the winners of each age division in the competition would play against each other to determine the overall winners in each division of all the local football associations involved.

On whether the current players would be discarded when another season of the HPL began, Morajane said participation of players was determined by age, and if players still qualified, they would be involved in the competition but new players will also be roped in as the league progressed.

Morajane said all their teams in the various age groups were determined to fight for the winner’s spot.

“We are there to compete and not to add numbers,” Morajane said about their chances of coming out as the overall winners in the competition involving the various associations.
