Goals galore as Alex United clobbers FC Kathorus

JOBURG - Alex United came from a goal down to bang in half a dozen that has further sunk FC Kathorus deeper into the relegation zone.

United won this ABC Motsepe League encounter played at the Balfour Park Stadium 6-2. The win ensures that United remain on top of the log with 62 points, a solitary point difference to their nearest rivals, African All Stars.

Second from the bottom of the log, Kathorus were the first to draw blood in the 22nd minute of the game, but United equalised with a penalty kick in the 35th minute after a Kathorus player handled the ball in the box. Bongani Mbonani stepped forward for the spot kick to equalise, which opened up the flood gates. Hefty United striker, Mfanafuthi ‘Isidlakela’ Mboma headed home his team’s second goal five minutes from the halftime break and Xumani Hlungwani added a third eight minutes into the second half.

Mboma added his second goal in the 74th minute and a minute later, Hlungwani scored his brace. United then took their foot off the accelerator and allowed Kathorus to get one back in the 88th minute. However, in referee’s optional time, United substitute Collins Zimba put the final nail into the coffin of Kathorus, making it six of the best.

A delighted United coach Tracy Lee-Pepper said she was happy with the half dozen goals, but was disappointed that her boys allowed the opposition to score two.

Kathorus coach Reginald Ketse was furious with his players. “We cannot fight to score goals and then leak them,” he said. “Our mission now is to ensure we collect at least nine points from our few remaining games if we’re to avoid relegation.”
