Absa Premiership trophy handover after last game is played

JOBURG - The Premier Soccer League (PSL) together with league sponsors, Absa have confirmed the trophy will be handed over to the eventual champions on 9 May.

The Premier Soccer League (PSL) together with league sponsors, Absa, have confirmed the trophy will only be handed over to the eventual champions on 9 May after the final game is played.

This was said by PSL CEO Brand de Villiers, who also said the last two block fixtures of the Absa Premiership on 6 and 9 May will be played simultaneously. Kick-off for the midweek fixtures will be 7.30pm while weekend fixtures will kick-off at 3pm.

De Villiers said the PSL, in consultation with Absa, has decided to hand over the trophy at the last fixture of the club that will emerge as champions of the Absa Premiership.

This means that even if a club has mathematically won the Absa Premiership before 9 May, they will not be handed the trophy until the last match. The PSL has prepared for all scenarios for the last weekend of the 2014/15 Absa Premiership should the championship race go to the last fixture, he said.

Runaway log leaders, Kaizer Chiefs could possibly be crowned champions-elect if they can win their match against Polokwane City on 22 May, and will only be awarded the trophy on 9 May. If Chiefs lose on Wednesday, then this opens the door for chasers, Mamelodi Sundowns.
