Fans ‘like’ Amakhosi

JOBURG - At a time of dwindling supporters at stadiums, Kaizer Chiefs has mounted a big digital campaign to woo fans.

At a time of dwindling supporters at soccer matches, Kaizer Chiefs has mounted a big digital campaign to woo fans.

The Amakhosi campaign has seen it break new ground by reaching an online landmark of two-million likes on Facebook. “It is a clear illustration of the ever-strengthening relationship between the club and its loyal support base and an indication of its undisputed leadership as a sports brand.

“Since the emergence of social media as an integral component of communication, Amakhosi has been at the forefront of maximising this new avenue as a means of interacting directly with its fan base and other stakeholders,” said Chiefs digital manager Kemiso Motaung.

The next best performing club on Facebook has only managed 500 000 likes so far. Chiefs achieved one million likes two years ago and has gone on to double that tally through a combination of dedication and high quality of content, Motaung said.

“Our social media presence is a very important way of staying directly in touch with the large Amakhosi family, not only in South Africa but well beyond our borders,” she added.

Motaung said the resulting figures spoke for themselves, and this served as a huge boost for the brand and the sponsors to know that the club’s popularity continued to increase.

She said it was imperative in this digital age for brands to engage with the public on a personal level in a way that encouraged fans to feel part of the process where they have a voice that will be heard.

“We closely monitor the evolution of the digital landscape and constantly strive to set new trends in order to consolidate our brand presence in the lives of our supporters and to attract new ones,” she added.

Chiefs currently occupy the top of the Absa Premiership log with 47 points from 20 games, 10 points ahead of their closest rivals, Sundowns. Amakhosi have also broken a record after going 19 games unbeaten.
