Clever Boys too smart for Downs

Clever moves and good ball distribution displayed by Bidvest Wits helped them leapfrog Mamelodi Sundowns into second spot on the Absa Premiership log with a 1-0 win.

The Clever Boys, as the varsity team are affectionately known, collected the maximum points from this joint second spot encounter at the Bidvest Stadium.

The goal came in the 75th minute from the boot of Bafana Bafana striker Sibusiso Vilakazi who was a thorn in the flesh of the Brazilian defence. Wearing the number 10 jersey, Vilakazi gave the Downs defence a torrid time with his clever moves and ball skills, and had lady luck been on his side he would have single-handedly demolished Sundowns. The visitors seemed content to earn a point in this away encounter, but did hit the Clever Boys’ upright twice.

Downs midfielder, Hlompho Kekana, famous for his long range pile drivers was denied twice by Wits keeper Moeneeb Josephs. In the dying minutes, Downs coach Pitso Mosimane made hasty substitutions in the hope of salvaging a draw but it was not to be.

Before this match, Downs and the Clever Boys were joint second to Kaizer Chiefs, but the Brazilians had a better goal average. Chiefs fans, mindful of last season when Downs literally pulled the rug from under the Amakhosi feet to bag the league title, came in droves to witness the demise of Sundowns.

They could hardly withhold their delight when the referee blew his whistle for full time.
