Alex football giant remembered in new tournament

ALEXANDRA - The Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association has honoured its longest-serving football administrator, the late Philemon Molepo.

Popularly known as Ntate Molepo to the Alex football fraternity, he was honoured with a tournament in his name known as Ntate Molepo Tournament. The tournament was launched on 17 February at the football headquarters at the Alexandra Stadium.

It features teams in the various age categories from U10, U13, U15, U17, U20, Seniors and Masters. All the divisions have 16 teams participating in the tournament which kicks off this weekend, 21 February, in the various age categories.

The preliminaries of the tournament, which is sponsored by the Gauteng Department of Sport, Arts, Culture and Recreation, took place on the weekend of the 14 and 15 February, with the final scheduled for the weekend of 11 and 12 April at the Alexandra Stadium.

Ntate Molepo was born in Limpopo and grew up in Alex and loved football so much that he would criss-cross the township on foot going from stadium to stadium to watch matches and troubleshoot where there were problems.

He died in 2008 and was buried in his home village in Limpopo, leaving behind four sons and a daughter and 15 grandchildren, some of whom came all the way from Limpopo to attend the launch and draw of the tournament in his name.
