After a couple of years in the doldrums due to infighting, the Alexandra Cricket Club has begun to make inroads in the development of cricket in townships.

Officially formed in 1995 with the aim of unearthing talented young black cricketers from the township, the club has provided many opportunities through its structure where talented young stars receive scholarships at prestigious schools such as Parktown Boys and King David.

The club’s coach, Jason Maswangayi said, “We have junior structures which run in conjunction with the Gauteng Cricket Board. There are 12 primary schools in Alex and we get the youth off the streets and they stay away from bad influences.

“We have challenges in terms of infrastructure and we don’t have the best of facilities around. We would like more corporate support, but its all work in progress.”

The revival of the club started two years ago when the Gauteng Cricket Board became involved. A road map for the club was drawn up by the cricket board which culminated in the formation of an interim executive, and the election of new office bearers led by chairman Jack Madiseng and secretary Tshepo Lesu.

The club is now fully functional and unearthing and developing cricket talent in the township.
