Humiliated United hope to pick up the pieces

Humiliated Alex United face a tall order when they clash with log leaders African All Stars on 20 February in a top-of-the-table clash in the ABC Motsepe League.

United travel to Daveyton for this away clash after a humiliating loss to the Vaal campus team of the North West University, losing a potential opportunity to go back to the top of the log.

Before the weekend games, three points separated United and Stars on the log with Stars leading the pack with 30 points from 13 games, while United are second from the same number of games.

Stars have a better record than the Hope City Giants in that they have won nine, drew three and lost one, while United have won nine and lost four.

Assuming that Stars won their weekend match away to AmaBEE – results of which are still not available on the South African Football Association website – they will now be six points clear of United.

United’s prolific goalscorer Skates Mbatha is believed to be starting on the bench for this top of the table clash. If they are to beat Stars, United need to play with more purpose than they did against the varsity team, and also make sure that their forwards do not forget to bring their striking boots along with them.

Gavin Abrahams and Mduduzi Mabizela are not available for the Stars game, so United coach Tracy-Lee Pepper will have to find suitable replacements, especially on the right wing were Mabizela plies his trade.

Mabizela is out with an injury while Abrahams was red-carded against Vaal campus and will have to sit out a two-match suspension.
