Defending champions of the Telkom Knockout, Platinum Stars bundled a lack-lustre Kaizer Chiefs out of the tournament in a penalty shootout.

The teams were tied 0-0 after regulation and extra time.

Chiefs’ fourth penalty was saved by the Stars keeper with Stars scoring their fifth, sending the defending champions into the semis with a 5-3 win.

Chiefs had broken the record held by Mamelodi Sundowns of a 15 match unbeaten streak in all competitions of the Premier Soccer League, and many said there were signs that Chiefs looked tired.

Stars now have a home semifinal date with Tshwane outfit, Sundowns and SuperSport United will travel to the Orlando Stadium to meet Orlando Pirates in the other semifinal. The dates of these matches will be announced later.

The Buccaneers will be without their Bafana Bafana and number one keeper, Senzo Meyiwa, who was shot dead on 26 October in a suspected robbery at his girlfriend Kelly Khumalo’s house in Vosloorus.

Tongues have already started wagging for a repeat of last year’s final in which Stars stunned Pirates in Mbombela to be crowned champions. Stars are a hoodoo team for Sundowns and the Brazilians are being written off judging from their performances in the competition.
