Alex teams club together to launch knockout cup

ALEXANDRA - In a rare spirit of self-reliance, football teams in Alexandra have not wasted time crying for sponsors but have instead clubbed together to launch a knockout cup for seniors in the local league.

In a rare spirit of self-reliance, football teams in Alexandra have not wasted time crying for sponsors, but have instead clubbed together to launch a knockout cup for seniors in the local league.

Secretary general of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association (ANLFA), Mafika Morajane said 16 teams in the local league had clubbed together, each paying R500, towards the launch of the new ANLFA Cup.

The inaugural cup will carry a first prize of R3 000 to be awarded to the ultimate winner of the knockout tournament which begins in earnest this weekend with the last 16 round of teams in action for a sport in the quarter finals.

Second runners-up in the knockout competition will receive R2 000, while the 3rd runners-up will receive R1 000. Gold medals will be awarded to the winners of the competition and silver and bronze medals to the second and third placed teams respectively.

“We currently do not have a sponsor for this competition, but the teams felt they could not sit on their laurels and wait for a sponsor or even go begging for it. They would rather take their destiny into their own hands and do something.

“We will, however, continue to search for a sponsor while the tournament is in progress. I am sure the sponsors will also be eager to come on board and support the noble cause once they can see the tangible results of the tournament,” Morajane said.

Morajane said if all goes well, the knockout tournament will become an annual feature in the calendar of Alex football. The last 16 draw will see Alex Liverpool, which has been relegated from the South African Football Association (Safa) Johannesburg Regional Promotional League, host Gauteng FC, Mighty Heroes versus Black Poison, Gunners against Howza De Laz, and Kings United meeting Phomolong All Stars.

Tangent Tornados will host Alex Young Lions, Boys of Hope up against Ratang Bana, Alex Junior City hosting Rainbow Stars and Ranger squaring up to Agent Zero. All matches will be played at the Victoria Park A and B stadiums in Lombardy East.
