Alex boys and girls teams crowned Joburg champions

ALEXANDRA - Alex football has been put on the map as a force to reckon with following wins by both U19 boys and girls teams in the Safa Johannesburg tournament.

Alex football has been put on the map as a force to be reckoned with following wins by its U19 boys and girls teams in the South African Football Association (Safa) Johannesburg tournament.

The Alex boys and girls teams were each crowned champions of the tournament after conquering all before them at Mayfair’s Arthur Block Park Stadium.

In their group, the girls’ won their first game against Rand Central 1-0 and went on to thrash Midrand 3-0 to advance to the semi-finals. In the semis they met Greater Mayfair and secured a 1-0 win to reach the final. They downed Deep South 3-0 in the final.

In the boys section, Alex won their first game against Deep South 2-0 and beat Roodepoort 3-0 before proceeding to the semi-finals.

In the semis, Alex met Deep South again as the best runners up team of the three groups and won the game 3-1.

Alex took on Eldorado Park in the final which was locked at 1-1 after 90 minutes of regulation time. The game went to penalties which Alex won 4-3.

Alex goalkeeper Gavin Philiso was back to his heroic best when he saved five penalties in the tournament. The Alex boys were coached by Eric Paul of Blue Aces in the Alex league, assisted by Tumelo Shai of Agent Zero.

The Alex girls were coached by Bluebirds’ Katlego Malaka, who was assisted by two female coaches, Sizakele Mavuso and Duduzile Myeki
