Take-aways for United at Highlands Park

ALEXANDRA - Alex United made an easy meal of one of their fiercest rivals in the Safa Second Division League.

They beat Highlands Park, their neighbours from Modderfontein 3-2 in their own backyard that showed just the kind of class that United are in this season.

United, as the log leaders, went into this game with their tails up and oozing confidence which was well displayed in the 90 minutes of play.

Club director Nick Nicolaou said the team played exceptionally well and gave Highlands no room to manoeuvre. Hope City Giants, as United is affectionately known in the country’s oldest township, Alexandra, were duly rewarded in the 20th minute with a superb goal from one of the team’s new signings, Sabelo ‘Professor’ Mayisela.

But the joy of United was short-lived as Highlands went on to equalise straight from the restart. With only 10 minutes remaining in the first half, United stalwart Samkelo ‘Bin Ladin’ Nkosi unleashed an unstoppable shot from just outside the big box for a 2-1 lead.

Midway through the second half Nkosi latched onto a fantastic through ball and had only the keeper to beat, but he was fouled from behind and the referee had no option but to award a penalty.

Up stepped the cool as a cucumber Mayisela to score his brace for a 3-1 scoreline. Although United were well in control, an unnecessary corner resulted in Highlands scrambling a goal to make the score 3-2.

United walked away with the three points and they still lead the pack on the log with 33 points from 14 games. Their nearest rivals, Diphiri have 30 points from the same number of games, while Highlands are number three on the log with 27 points, also from 14 games.

United play their last game of the first round on 7 March against LMP Stars at the Alexandra Stadium and kick-off is scheduled for 7pm.

“The entire Alexandra United team is calling on all the people of Alexandra to come in their numbers for this game as well to help the team get back into the National First Division,” said Nicolaou.
