Cup tournament makes goals happen

JOBURG - More than half a million rand in charity funds has already been raised through the Nedbank Cup's Goals4Goals campaign.

This was announced during the draw for the last 16 teams in the cup at Carlton Centre in the Johannesburg CBD. A total of 55 goals were scored in the last-32 round of matches. For each goal scored in the tournament, Nedbank pledged to donate R10 000 toward the costs of building a multi-purpose sports facility for a still to be named disadvantaged school. The bank is looking to raise R2 million.

Besides building a sports facility, the bank will use part of the money to kit more than 100 football teams in various schools across the country.

The top goal scorer of each round receives R10 000 for himself and another R10 000 will go towards providing sports equipment and kits for a school of his choice anywhere in the country. Bloemfontein Celtic’s Musa Nyatama scooped this award in the round of 32 teams.

The bank’s Sydney Mbhele said his company would continue to partner and empower communities, and current and future soccer stars with the resources and skills they require to make goals happen.
