United continue their winning streak

ALEXANDRA - Alex United are on a roll as they continue their winning streak.

Alex United could be on the road to promotion to the National First Division next season.

This is probable if the team are able to maintain their winning streak until they reach the halfway mark of the Safa Second Division league.

For the past four weeks, the Hope City Giants, as they are affectionately known to their fans in the country’s oldest township, Alexandra, have gone six games unbeaten. This has propelled them to the top of the log, five points clear of their nearest rival, Highlands Park.

In their sixth win in a row, United beat FC Kathorus of the Katlehong, Thokoza and Voslorus areas by 2-0 in a match played at a blistering pace at the Alexandra Stadium. United dominated proceedings but still have a lot of work to do on their finishing ability upfront after wasting numerous glaring scoring opportunities.

The first half ended at 0-0 but United came back from the halftime break and continued from where they had left off.

They were rewarded in the 66th minute when Kathorus buckled under constant pressure and Mlungisi Mbujana headed home a brilliant cross. United piled on the pressure and it was just a matter of time before the second goal was scored.

This came in the 75th minute after some good pressure by Samukelo ‘Beenie’ Nkosi. The Kathorus goalkeeper fumbled the ball and Nkosi pounced on the loose ball and slotted it into the back of the net.

“We played fantastic football which the crowd enjoyed thoroughly, but the unfortunate thing is we could not score many goals. We let opportunities slip by,” said club director Nick Nicolaou.

The next home game for United will be against African All Stars on 21 February at the Alexandra Stadium. Kickoff is at 7pm. On 15 February United will be away to Attlie at the Makhulong Stadium in Thembisa and kickoff is at 3pm.
