Alexandra’s young rugby lionesses roar with pride

Young rugby players from Alex have made a mark on the national stage, showcasing their skills and determination at the Girls National Week tournament.

Thirteen talented young rugby players from Alexandra have been making waves in the world of sport after they were selected during the Girls Schools League to represent the Golden Lions at the Girls National Week tournament.

The tournament was held at Jeppe High School for Boys’ sports grounds from July 1 to 5. The girls, hailing from Marlboro Gardens Secondary School, Minerva Secondary, KwaBhekilanga High, and Realogile High, were selected to play for Golden Lions U16 and U18 teams.

The U16 team, comprising Hlamalani Mofokeng, Goitsemodimo Kwape, Chidimma Kwetle, Mpho Mxhanywa, Avelile Magekana, Owami Ngcukane, Boitshepo Mamabolo, Alice Ncube, Leakalala Phoko, and Nompumelelo Ngwenya, lost against Western Province.

However, the U18 team, consisting of Penelope Mdunge, Patience Dikotla, and Ntokozo Kandiado, had a stronger performance. They won two games against Eastern Province, but unfortunately lost in the finals.

Mofokeng, from the U16 team, was selected as the girl of the match for her outstanding performance.
“I’m thrilled to have received this award. It’s a great feeling to know that all my hard work paid off after such a challenging match. I’m grateful to my coaches and teammates for their support throughout this journey,” Mofokeng said.
Mdunge and Dikotla, from the U18 team, were also recognised as girls of the match.

Dikotla echoed similar sentiments. “I’m humbled by this recognition. It’s a great honour to be part of this team and to have the opportunity to play against such talented players. I’m grateful for this experience and hope it will inspire other young girls in Alexandra to take up rugby.”
