A Top 8 battle beckons for AMSL this weekend

The AMSL invites football stakeholders across Alexandra and surrounding areas to join the journey, celebrate the spirit of football and embrace the magic that makes this tournament unique.

A bruising 2024 league season opener in the form of a Top 8 battle of the Alex Masters Soccer League (AMSL) is on the cards this weekend.

The AMSL8 is a football knockout cup competition that is made up of teams that finished in the Top 8 bracket of the league’s previous season and marks the opener of the new league season.
The first round is structured such that the team at the top of the previous season’s table plays the team that finished in eighth position while the second-placed side takes on the seventh. The third plays sixth and the fourth plays fifth.

This competition starts on February 25 at the quarterfinal stage, with the semis coming up on March 3 and the final set for March 10, making it one of the longest-standing knockout cup competitions in the AMSL.
AMSL’s chairperson of the Competitions Committee Percy Ndaba said the winners would be awarded a trophy, one of the five domestic trophies attainable by its competitors each season, with the other four being the league title, the Winter Cup, the Spring Cup, and the Year-End Knockout.

The two previous winners of the Top 8 were Benfica FC [2022 season champions] and Asazi Bafana FC who are the current defending champions and are both in action this weekend.
The round-of-eight draw, which unfolded at the Victoria Grounds in Lombardy East on February 18, showcased a dynamic mix of teams poised to compete in the tournament’s quarterfinals.

As the 2024 Top 8 Cup unfolds, Ndaba said the AMSL invited football stakeholders across Alexandra and surrounding areas to join the journey, celebrate the spirit of football and embrace the magic that makes this tournament unique.
“Throughout its illustrious history, the Top 8 continues to play a pivotal role in shaping masters football and provides a platform to kick off the AMSL season each year.”

The draw is as follows:
Asazi Bafana versus Mosquito
Cameroon versus Herdbuoys
Joy versus Chivas
Tsutsumani versus Benfica.
