Nedbank Cup semi-final draw produces Soweto derby

Football fans of the two Soweto giants Orlando Pirates and Kaizer Chiefs can brace themselves for the reality that one of the two giants will not be in the final of the country's richest football tournament, the Nedbank Cup.

One of the Soweto giants will not be taking part in the Nedbank Cup 2023 final following a semi-final draw that produced the famous Soweto derby of Kaizer Chiefs and Orlando Pirates.

Stellenbosch FC, who knocked out the cup defending champions and run-away winners of the DStv Premiership 2022/23 edition Mamelodi Sundowns over the weekend, will take on Sekhukhune United for a spot in the final.
The draw was conducted immediately after the last fixture of the quarterfinals between Royal AM and Kaizer Chiefs which took place at Chatsworth Stadium in Durban, KwaZulu-Natal province.

Nedbank’s Tobie Badenhorst said: “We have witnessed another thrilling Nedbank Cup quarter-final and we look forward to an entertaining weekend of semi-final fixtures on May 6 and 7.

We’re nearing the business end of the 16th edition of the Nedbank Cup and we’re excited to have launched our new campaign with some of SA’s biggest football stars.

The campaign is built on the sentiment that the small, everyday choices can have the biggest impact on our lives,” he said.

This season, Nedbank partnered with renowned coach and football legend Pitso Mosimane and former players Stanton Fredericks, Teko Modise and Daine Klate as well as footballer Siphiwe Tshabalala to share their stories to inspire South Africans to make decisions that will benefit their futures.

The Premier Soccer League will announce the venues and kick-off times for the semi-final games after consultation with sponsor Nedbank. Nedbank has already indicated plans for activities at the semi-finals, where football fans will get the opportunity to engage with tournament ambassadors in the lead-up to the match days.
