Throughout Covid-19 when there was a lot of uncertainty and the poverty levels of the township were fully exposed, Run Alex Athletics Club remained a place where people found their sanity through their regular training runs in the township.
“Our training runs that are free and open to every member of the public, kept many members of the community active.
“We are delighted that 25 of our members will be participating in this year’s edition of the Comrades Marathon which takes place on August 28. It is a testament that our work as a club has had a positive impact on the community of Alex,” said Lebogang Mogotlane, Run Alex Athletics Club chairperson.
Corporate assistance always plays a big role in making participation in such events possible for community clubs such as Run Alex AC, Mogotlane said, during the announcement of a team of 25 athletes that the club will send to the Comrades this year.
One of the sponsors Royal Bafokeng Platinum said in a statement, “The health, safety and wellness of our employees and communities feature prominently in our More than Mining philosophy. It is for this reason that we are proud to lend a helping hand to the club so that it can continue to promote a healthy lifestyle for the community.”
The company assisted the club with tracksuits and gazebos for the Comrades Marathon.
