Team Soccer sets off the 200km BrightRock Battle of the Sports

JOBURG – Bafana Bafana legends Teko Modise, Siyabonga Nomvethe and Matthew Booth joined expedition leader, Erik Vermeulen, to see if they are strong enough to beat the blistering pace already set by the rugby and running teams.

Soccer legends kickstarted their 200km BrightRock Battle of the Sports endurance challenge in the Northern Cape on 28 September until 1 October.

Jacqui Moloi from Cathy Findley Public Relations said that over the 96 hours, Bafana Bafana legends Teko Modise, Siyabonga Nomvethe and Matthew Booth joined expedition leader, Erik Vermeulen, to see if they are strong enough to beat the blistering pace already set by the rugby and running teams. Team manager, Neil Tovey will oversee the team.

The BrightRock Battle of the Sports event sees icons of cricket, rugby, running and soccer race go head-to-head in a 200km endurance race challenge that is unassisted, unsupported and challenged by an expedition clock that never stops. This is all done in an effort to raise funds for Covid-19 care and critical treatment.

Booth, who retired in 2014, said he was really looking forward to the opportunity to be part of a team again and challenge himself. “My challenge will be keeping up with Siya who is still playing professional football, and Teko who is still very lean and quick. When compared to the rugby guys, however, we are all sleek and light on our feet and I think this will be a big advantage,” said Booth.

Modise added, “I have a naturally competitive nature and pitting our skills against other codes is something we have never done. As Team Soccer, we need to push ourselves further as footballers and this is a great opportunity.”

Team manager, Neil Tovey said, “If you are a soccer fan, we appeal to you to support this worthy challenge with a small donation. As soccer players, we have led a blessed life and now is our chance to support those people affected by the pandemic. Our teams have been training hard and are definitely mentally ready for this challenge. Your support will make all the difference.”

Clive Grinaker founder of NGO, Events to Aid, who partnered with Right to Care said, “For those that haven’t been following the challenge, we are appealing to all sports fans to support their heroes and donate to this worthy cause.”
