Alex Birds want unfinished season cancelled altogether

As Safa toys with the resumption of the unfinished 2020 Sasol Women's League, some teams want it cancelled.

The South African Football Association (Safa) is toying around with the idea of resuming the unfinished business of the 2020 Sasol Women’s League in January next year.

This was revealed by acting Safa CEO Advocate Tebogo Motlanthe, who said the mother body of football was considering resuming the unfinished Sasol Women’s League in early January with the hope that it could then begin with the 2021 season.

“We are still toying around with the idea and nothing has been cast in stone as yet. Once we have finalised on what we think is feasible, we will then communicate with our structures and the way forward,” Motlanthe said.
While the mother body ponders the unfinished business of the 2020 Sasol Women’s League, some teams on the ground feel the unfinished league of 2020 should either be cancelled altogether or started afresh, but with the nullification of the four games played so far.

Founder of Blue Birds Ladies Football Club in Alexandra and now secretary-general of the Alexandra Northrand Local Football Association Malvin Khumalo, said he was of the view that the unfinished league should not resume where it left off but rather start afresh.

“The players have been out of action for a long time and they have lost the rhythm of the game, and taking into consideration that only four games had been played, I personal think we should cancel the 2020 season altogether and start the 2021 league.

“If we have to go ahead with the completion of the 2020 season, then resuming it in late February would be a better option as we need to properly prepare the players for the marathon season ahead,” Khumalo added.

He said he was considering the fact that most of the players in the league have been away since March and have not even kicked a ball since, let alone train. The same players will be away again during the coming festive season in December.

“With almost a year without kicking the ball, I think it will only be fair to cancel the games that have already been played and start from scratch. Starting late February would be reasonable as it gives the teams enough time to prepare.”
