A Greek tragedy of sorts

BALFOUR -– The Greeks lose out to JVW Ladies and also their title hopes are shattered.

Croesus Ladies’ title ambitions were dashed when their championship arch-rivals JVW Ladies pulled the rug from under their feet with a 1–0 win in the Sasol Women’s League encounter at Northview High School.

The Greek Queens, as Croesus Ladies are fondly known to their avid fans, had to settle for fourth spot on the log following this defeat in what was a crucial league decider, with JVW just above them.

With only one round of games to go, the title race has already been decided, with Tshwane University of Technology Ladies grabbing the number one spot followed by the Brazilian Ladies, Mamelodi Sundowns.

The Croesus-JVW game started at a fast pace and it was JVW’s Sandisiwe Nohayi who broke through a maze of Croesus defenders in the 4th minute and raced towards the goals. Croesus goalkeeper Thoko Mndaweni had to come off her line to narrow the angle of the advancing striker but Nohayi dribbled past her to give her team the early lead.

The early goal unsettled the Greek Queens and they found it hard to recover. They were denied an equaliser by the JVW keeper after spot-kick specialist Marry Ntsweng’s strike just outside was parried over the bar.

In the second half, JVW sought to increase their lead as they raided the Greeks’ goal but the Greek Queens had an opportunity to equalise but Ntsweng’s header went over the crossbar.

If there was a Diski Queen of the Match award in this league, Ntsweng would have easily grabbed the honour. She single-handedly did everything possible to keep her team ticking as she played the role of striker, defender and as a midfield maestro.

On a positive note, the Greek Queens have always been the whipping girls of the Sasol Women’s League but this season saw a transformed side that was determined to chase for honours since they relocated from Randburg to Balfour Park.
