Chiefs and Sundowns in mind games ahead of their titanic clash in Helix Cup

JOBURG – Kaizer Chiefs and Mamelodi Sundowns supporters have been urged to buy their tickets early for the inaugural Shell Helix Ultra Cup on 21 July.

A refreshed CBD striking partnership has been reincarnated at Kaizer Chiefs which is more reminiscent of the former deadly trio of Mamelodi Sundowns that tormented defenders for the past four seasons of the Absa Premiership.

This was part of the mind games between the two giants of South African football ahead of their clash in the inaugural Shell Helix Ultra Cup at the FNB Stadium on 21 July, a clash which has been pitted as the best of Joburg versus the best of Tshwane.

The recently launched cup is an initiative of the Stadium Management SA as part of its efforts to boost the coffers of running the various stadia under its wing. Media liaison officers of the Soweto Glamour Boys and the Yellow Machine Vina Maphosa and Thulani Thuswa respectively said their teams were ready to go at each other come 21 July.

“I have acquired the new CBD in the form of [Leonardo] Castro, [Khama] Billiat and our new signing Madagascan international Andriamirado Hasina Andrianarimanana, better known by his nickname ‘Dax’, who makes up the ‘D’ in the CBD striking trio,” boasted a boisterous Maphosa to his counterpart.

Thuswa retorted, “I am sure you’re aware that we have given you spent forces in Castro and Billiat. Both of them come from us and we know how they play… that’s how generous we are at Sundowns. Instead of boasting, you should be thanking us for the offer.”

Maphosa and Thuswa said they couldn’t wait for the match so they could have the names of their teams engraved on the cup. “I can safely say the first name on that trophy will be Sundowns,” said Thuswa, to which Maphosa countered, “Did you mean to say Chiefs.”

The cup is being punted as an exciting replacement for the hugely popular Soweto derby between Chiefs and Orlando Pirates which has been dogged by dull draws of late.
