Finding balance on the see-saw of life

With the recent downpour in Gauteng representing weather of the unbalanced kind, from undisrupted sunshine to hurricane-type rain in a matter of minutes, I couldn’t help but wonder about the concept of balance, extremes and polarity in our lives and within our very own nature. Mother Nature brought about a brain fart.

As the saying goes: ‘Balance is the key to life’. With this in mind, our innate goal in life is to seek balance and within this seeking, and subsequent finding, happiness is achieved. Well, if balance is happiness, and not fast cars and exotic destinations as some of us assume, then I must be Eeyore from Winnie the Pooh. My life and so many others I know represent that of the unbalanced kind. In fact, let’s be frank, a large percentage of humankind is a bunch of Eeyores.

Although generalising, we are either workaholics or couch potatoes, content or depressed, running around like chickens without heads or staring at drying paint, broke or rich, or stark raving mad or overly rational. Where is the balance, people? When did living the grey become a bad thing?

I’ve noticed in my life that there is not much balance. Let’s call a spade a spade. I overwork. I party too hard. There is no balance in my finances as well, with me either being rich for a day and then totally broke and eating beans on toast the next. I’m so busy going up and down on the metaphorical see-saw that my thighs are starting to burn. And when you actually take the time to see all that is unbalanced in your life, it’s quite shocking really.

It’s time to start seeking balance, to observe and become aware of where we are jumping from black to white, from complete ends of the scale, in different areas of our lives. We often wonder why we are not happy or where the pot of golden rays of happiness lies. Maybe it’s simply finding balance and living balanced lives. Quite simply, I am tired of playing on the see-saw of polarity and will, from today, seek all that is balance and hope that other Eeyores such as myself do the same.
